House Committee Blocks UAE Ports Deal

Today, the House Appropriations Committee voted 62-2 to block the deal that would allow the United Arab Emirates to run some US ports. The worst part is that the committee is run by Republicans. President Bush has threatened to veto any legislation passed to block the deal. Bush has never used his veto power, so doing it against the wishes of Republicans would be quite astounding. This whole port issue has become about politics, rather than looking at the deal intelligently and realizing it wont hurt us with security and also that $6.8 billion is pretty good economically. I am not being an apologist for Bush, I just honestly feel that the government would not allow this to happen if it was a national security threat. The UAE has been an ally since 9/11, and I think allowing them to run some ports would benefit both countries. Liberals always complain about our image around the world, however when the Bush Administration wants to work with allies like in this case, they complain until kingdom-come. Almost all of our ports are run by foreign countries, but nobody knew that until this whole situation arose, thats just the nature of the seaport game. Its an international industry. So Hillary Clinton, and almost every other person against this deal is against it only because the country is Arab, and if they tell you otherwise they are lying through their teeth. House Republicans just handed the mainstream media a well-wrapped gift, and you can bet they will beat this one to death.

I'm glad you speak for every person who is against the UAE taking over the ports. Because, as you say, the racist people who want to block the deal are simply lying through their teeth about the real reasons why they voted against it. I'm grateful that you're able to read all of these people's minds. Without you, it's like we would have independent, free-thinking minds deciding things for themselves. That would be dangerous.

"it wont hurt us with security and also that $6.8 billion is pretty good economically" Brad i dont know you but you are an apolgist for bush. The deal will not be economically good for us because we make NOTHING off the deal! The company is not paying us $6.8 billion they are paying the british company that already owns the rights. And please if you are going to expose you views about the security of this deal do "some" research. The coast gaurd among other orginizations gave the government warnings on the intimate knowledge that this would give not to a company but to a state. a foriegn state that produced two of the terrorists that attacked our country. It would be the only port in the country that has all of its off-shore security run not by a business in an other state, but directly by another state. In response to the warnings from many the administration decided not to thoroughly investigate (an intelligent option) but to FAST TRACK their application. It is obvious they knew this would cause a stir so they tried to slip it in under the wire!

You are not concerned with listening to reason, only what the president and his far right agenda tells you to think. it is like listening to a recorded message from the whitehouse.
